I frequently run a loop around  a lake in the Laguna Niguel Regional Park.   Today, I ran into a detour.  They were working on the bridge so I couldn’t go on my normal route.  Instead, I headed out of the park using a different exit and ran past a road leading up the hill.  Something caused me to turn around and go up the hill.  I was rewarded with a vista view that went on for miles.\n\nIt reminded me that often the path we chose to take is not the one we are meant to take. When we embrace the detours in our lives we can find exciting new possibilities we didn’t know existed.  Trusting in the journey is hard, but rewarding.\n\nLeaders may face a situation where they start down a path and circumstances intervene causing a needed detour.  Resistance to taking the new route can be strong.  A leaders needs to ask what will the cost be if I don’t take the detour?  Do I risk running off the road all together?\n\nDiverting a course of action is not a failure, frequent changes are often needed in order to reach the final destination or goal.  The question is how change resilient are you? Your organization? Your people? Are you ready for detours?
