Here is a simple and accurate measuring stick that can tell companies and leaders  how well one company or one manager is doing as compared to others, in terms of finding and keeping talented people.

As part of research undertaken by the Gallup Organization, they asked, “What do the most talented employees need from their workplace?” Talented employees need great managers. While they may join for any number of reasons, how long that employee stays and how productive he is while he is there is determined by his relationship with his immediate supervisor.

They identified these twelve questions to measure the strength of a workplace.

  1. Do I know what is expected of me at work?

  3. Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right?
  4. \n

  5. At work, do I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day?
  6. \n

  7. In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for doing good work?
  8. \n

  9. Does my supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about me as a person?
  10. \n

  11. Is there someone at work who encourages my development?
  12. \n

  13. At work, do my opinions seem to count?
  14. \n

  15. Does the mission/purpose of my company make me feel my job is important?
  16. \n

  17. Are my co-workers committed to doing quality work?
  18. \n

  19. Do I have a best friend at work?
  20. \n

  21. In the last six months, has someone at work talked to me about my progress?
  22. \n

  23. This last year, have I had opportunities at work to learn and grow?

If you can create the kind of environment where employees answer positively to these twelve questions, then you will have built a great place to work.
