What is Succession Planning and why is it important?  It’s having the right number of people with the right skills, experiences and competencies in the right jobs at the right time.\n\nNavigating a leadership transition can be tumultuous, but it doesn’t have to be a crisis. Succession planning helps create a pipe-line of employees that are prepared to assume key roles when they become available.\n\nPart of the larger veil of talent management, succession planning should be systematic and integrated.  This process involves assessing people (and their interests), positions and potential.\n\nSuccession planning is not a one time event, it is a continuous process:\n

    \n

  • Identify key roles for succession
  • \n

  • Define the competencies and profile required to be effective in those roles
  • \n

  • Assess people against these criteria
  • \n

  • Identify pools of talent that could fill key roles
  • \n

  • Develop employees to be ready for advancement to key roles
  • \n

\nWhen succession planning activities are absent, morale and productivity can been severely impacted, services interrupted and the reputation of the organization harmed.\n\nLeaders that prioritize succession activities and have a talent mindset will find improved employee commitment and retention which leads to an enhanced customer experience and ultimately greater business results.\n\n \n\n
