One of the most practical leadership ideas shared by Janine McClintock during The Nonprofit Edge podcast was what she calls “The Power of Three.”
Too often leaders bring problems upward without first slowing down long enough to think critically about the situation. Janine shared a framework she used with her teams that encouraged self-coaching, ownership, and stronger decision making.
Before bringing a challenge forward, team members were asked to come prepared with:
• Three important pieces of information about the situation
• Three possible consequences if the issue is not addressed
• Three possible solutions
The power of this approach is that it does not require someone to have everything figured out. It simply requires them to think. And that changes everything. Instead of creating dependency, leaders begin developing problem solvers. Instead of reacting emotionally or impulsively, teams learn how to pause, reflect, and engage with challenges more intentionally.
Janine made a powerful point during the episode: when people are invited into the thinking process, they begin practicing agency. They begin seeing themselves not as passive participants waiting for answers, but as contributors capable of helping shape outcomes.
That is leadership development in action. The Power of Three is simple, practical, and immediately applicable for nonprofit leaders trying to build healthier, stronger, more empowered teams.
Thank you, Janine McClintock, for such thoughtful wisdom on The Nonprofit Edge.
