Over 150 people attended Nonprofits by the Numbers presented by OneOC. The program featured presentations by Kathleen Costello and Dr. Shelly Arsneault from Cal State University, Fullerton sharing the results of a comprehensive study on the nonprofit sector in Orange County. David Greco, Nonprofit Finance Fund talked about broader trends in the nonprofit sector based on a nationwide survey and Regina Birdsell from the Center for Nonprofit Management spoke on the OC nonprofit compensation & benefits study
In 2010, 3,181 nonprofits in Orange County reported $8.2 billion revenues representing a significant driver of the economy in OC. But the median revenue went down from data collected in 2000. In fact, 43% of OC’s nonprofits reported an income loss in 2010. We have a lot more nonprofits doing more with less.
The demand for services is accelerating and continues to outpace funding. Most nonprofits have less than 90 days of cash on hand, yet nonprofit leaders are feeling slightly better about their financial condition.
Nonprofits needs to gain comfort in articulating their financial condition and raising the need to funders, when in fact that is the most crucial area about which they should be speaking to funders. For funders it’s important to consider whole-enterprise health and fund accordingly.
Wage freezes will continue to affect 1/3 of nonprofits, but nearly 2/3 have budgeted a median salary increase of 2.5% with continued attention to pay for performance. Layoffs are anticipated by 23% of nonprofits, but on the bright side 38% are considering an increase in staff. Organizations are supplementing with non-cash programs such as education assistance, flexible schedules and employee appreciation to retain staff and boost morale.
To help the audience interpret the data Shelley Hoss, President of OC Community Foundation and Lucy Dunn, President of OC Business Council joined David and Regina for a panel discussion moderated by Dan McQuaid, CEO of OneOC.
The event was generously sponsored by Wells Fargo and hosted at Taco Bell headquarters in Irvine.
