As part of  a client workshop with 60 employees, I asked the participants to write a script and share with their coworkers and managers:

  • How I work best …
  • What I need to do my best work…

As  each person spoke, there was one resounding common theme.  Regardless of title, tenure or function, people wanted clarity about expectations.  They weren’t saying micromanage me and tell me how to do my job; but instead tell me what is expected of me.  This reinforces how clear expectations are a basic human need as is our need to talk regularly about our responsibilities and the progress we are making toward meeting those expectations.

If you are a leader that wants to create a happier workplace that performs at high levels, focus on these areas:

  1. Set clear expectations
  2. Talk regularly about responsibility and progress
  3. Encourage and nurture employee strengths
  4. Create a motivating environment
  5. Build trusting relationships
  6. Help overcome obstacles
  7. Create a culture of accountability
  8. Make informed, unbiased decision for the good of the the team and the company
  9. Provide consistent communication

Happy, engaged employees are less likely to leave and are more productive.  When a leader can meet these employee needs, it is a driver to long-term company success.
